This is a great introductory lesson for the school year. Students will need immediate exposure to complex texts with academic vocabulary that are referred to throughout a unit.

Students will also need to have immediate exposure to Main and Central Idea because they are foundational skills for the TNReady Standards. When students have content mastery with main and central idea, they will be able to analyze the development of a central idea over a text, analyze an author’s use of rhetorical devices, and make claims about the efficacy of an argument.

This lesson is appropriate for upper middle grades in the English Language Arts content area.
